Why white oak?

Rift cut

Our white oak is rift cut: sawn so the grain runs in straight, even lines, with little of the ray fleck you see in other cuts. It gives doors a clean, calm look.

Hard and stable

White oak rates about 1,360 on the Janka hardness scale, close to hard maple. Its pores are naturally closed, which is why it has long been used for barrels and boats, and it holds up well in kitchens and baths.

Light to medium stains, or clear

White oak suits a clear topcoat or a light to medium stain, which keeps its warm color and straight grain in view.

White oak or red oak?

White oak is lighter and more golden, with straighter grain. Red oak has a pinker tone and the bold, arched grain many people think of as “oak”. We make doors in both.

White Oak questions

Can I order white oak doors in any size?

Yes. Every white oak door and drawer front is made to the width and height you enter, and the product page shows the price as you go. How to measure

What is rift-cut white oak?

Rift cut is a way of sawing the log so the grain runs in straight, tight lines across the board, with very little ray fleck. It’s the most uniform look you can get in oak.

White oak or red oak?

White oak is lighter and more golden, with straight grain and closed pores. Red oak is pinker, with open pores and a bolder grain pattern, and costs less. If you’re after the classic oak look, red oak is the one; for a calm, modern look, white oak.

Is white oak good for kitchen cabinets?

Yes. It’s hard (about 1,360 on the Janka scale), and its closed pores resist moisture, so it stands up well in kitchens and baths.
