Frequently Asked Questions

Matching cabinet door front profiles can feel tricky, but it’s not too complicated. You’ll need to know your door or drawer front shape, rail and stile profile, panel profile, and edge. Take a photo or bring your phone or tablet into the area with the cabinets to compare our inventory with your doors. You’ll also need to know your door measurements and wood species to ensure they look similar.

Cabinet door overlays refer to how the cabinet door connects to the frame. They affect how much of the frame shows. Different overlays can include:

  • Inset overlays that fit flush with the face of the cabinet when closed
  • Lipped or half-inset doors that have a groove cut all around the edge
  • Partial overlays, which are among the most common types of doors
  • Full overlays or “Euro-doors,” which cover the entire frame and provide a sleek, seamless appearance.
  • Standard overlays on top of the face frame

Shaker profile cabinets are a style of door that uses a five-piece door and recessed center panel. The name comes from the Shaker religious sect, who designed furniture according to high-quality standards. Shaker-style doors include a center panel, vertical stiles, and horizontal rails. Shaker cabinets are known for their clean, simple lines and are a popular choice for traditional and modern kitchens.

Panel and shaker refer to two different styles of cabinet doors.

Panel cabinet doors include any door with a panel inserted into the frame. These panels may be flat or raised. Raised panel doors have a center panel that is raised from the rest of the door, usually with a contoured edge for style. Flat panels have flat center panels with raised frames around it.

Shaker cabinet doors, meanwhile, are a type of flat panel door that is simple and functional. They are five-piece doors with recessed center panels.

In essence, all shaker doors are panel doors, but not all panel doors are shaker doors. The term “panel” refers to a broad category of doors, and “shaker” refers to a specific style within that category.
