Why walnut?

Color all its own

Walnut’s heartwood runs from light to deep chocolate brown. Select grade keeps the color even across a door, with the lighter sapwood only in some deeper profiles and on the back.

Clear or stained

Most walnut doors are finished clear to show the natural color, but walnut takes light to dark stains well. Over time and light, walnut tends to mellow to a slightly lighter, warmer brown.

Hard enough for everyday use

Walnut rates about 1,010 on the Janka hardness scale: softer than maple or oak, but a durable hardwood for cabinet doors and drawer fronts.

A small knot or two

Select walnut may have a few pin knots or small knot clusters, as long as the color stays consistent. That’s part of the character of the wood.

Walnut questions

Can I order walnut doors in any size?

Yes. Every walnut door and drawer front is made to the width and height you enter, and the product page shows the price as you go. How to measure

Should I stain walnut?

Most customers choose a clear topcoat, which shows walnut’s natural color. Walnut also takes light to dark stain colors well if you want a different tone.

Does walnut change color over time?

Yes, a little. With time and light, walnut tends to mellow to a slightly lighter, warmer brown. Doors from the same order age together.

Why does walnut cost more?

Walnut is a premium hardwood with limited supply, and select-grade boards with even color are harder to find. The price on each product page includes it as you build.
