UNASSEMBLED BOXES REQUIRE SOME WOODWORKING SKILLS TO ASSEMBLE. THIS MAY INCLUDE FITTING DOVETAILS, GLUING, FILLING, AND SANDING. IF YOU ARE UNSURE, FACTORY ASSEMBLY IS A GREAT VALUE! Dovetails MUST be assembled as soon as you receive them. Changes in relative humidity will greatly affect the wood. Products ordered unassembled can not be returned for failed assembly.

Determine Which Slides You’ll Use

You must first decide what type of drawer slides you want to use. If you are reusing your existing slides, simply measure your existing drawer box and enter those dimensions into the Customizer.

If you need new slides, you’ll need to choose which mounting style you want. There are two main styles of slides that we recommend: Side Mount and Under Mount. These terms refer to how the slide mounts to the drawer box. Both mount to the cabinet in similar ways.

Measure the exact width and height of your opening. Also, measure from the face of the cabinet to the back inside wall of the cabinet.

WIDTH: For drawer boxes with 5/8″ sides. subtract 3/8″ from the opening width. If using a drawer box with 1/2″ thick sides, subtract 5/8″.

HEIGHT: Subtract at least 7/8″ from the opening height.

DEPTH: MUST match the slide length. Available slide lengths are 9, 12, 15, 18, and 21″ in standard duty and 18, 21, 24, 27, and 30″ in heavy-duty. Kitchen cabinets will usually use a 21″ slide so the drawer box must be exactly 21″. Bathroom cabinets usually need 18″ slides with 18″ deep drawer boxes.

For KV 8400 and 8450FM Side Mount Slides

Measure the exact width and height of your opening. Also, measure from the face of the cabinet to the back inside wall of the cabinet.

WIDTH: Subtract 1-1/16″ from the opening width. This is regardless of the drawer box side thickness.

HEIGHT: Subtract at least 1/2″ from the opening height.

DEPTH: The outside depth dimension of the new drawer should usually match the slide length. But this is not as critical as with under-mount slides. Kitchen cabinets usually need 22″ slides and bathrooms usually need 18″ slides.

Ordering:

Dovetail Drawer Boxes can be ordered to specifically suit your needs. Dovetails can be ordered assembled or unassembled. If ordered assembled, they can also be pre-finished in durable clear conversion varnish.

When ordering, please refer to drawer boxes using WIDTH x DEPTH x HEIGHT, as illustrated in the diagram below.

Dovetail Drawer Box Dimensions

Tolerances

The Cabinet Door Store warrants that the width and height are to be within +/- 1 mm and the depth to be within +/- 3mm.

Prefinishing

The Cabinet Door Store sprays a 35° post catalyst lacquer as the standard sheen of clear finish. When the drawer boxes are ordered assembled and prefinished the clear lacquer is applied after the drawer box is assembled. The drawer box is sprayed on the inside and outside but not on the underside. When ordering “prefinished” our standard default is to finish the drawer box with a clear lacquer coating. When a drawer box is ordered unassembled and prefinished the parts will come clear lacquered on all sides. Note that when ordered unassembled and prefinished an adhesive that adheres to lacquer must be used in the assembly process.

Assembling Half-Blind Dovetail Drawer Boxes

UNASSEMBLED BOXES REQUIRE SOME WOODWORKING SKILLS TO ASSEMBLE. THIS MAY INCLUDE FITTING DOVETAILS, GLUING, FILLING, AND SANDING. IF YOU ARE UNSURE, FACTORY ASSEMBLY IS A GREAT VALUE! Dovetails MUST be assembled as soon as you receive them. Changes in relative humidity will greatly affect the wood. Products ordered unassembled can not be returned for failed assembly.

  1. Arrange your tail (sides) and pin (front and back) pieces on a solid work surface. Make sure all pins and tails will line up and will assemble properly. If necessary, go through the motions of dry assembly before applying any glue.
  2. Lay one tail board down, dado (⅜” groove) facing up. Choose a pin board and apply a small amount of glue into each socket.
  3. Gently insert the sockets of a pin board over the tails of the tail board, aligning the dado. You will have to use some downward force. If you find you need abnormal force then ease the edges of the tails. Be careful not to sand the outside profile (dovetail) of the tail only the part that is binding in the socket.
  4. Insert the opposite pin board over the other end of the tail board after applying glue to it’s sockets.
  5. For Plywood drawer boxes, apply glue to the dados of the pin board and the two tail boards. For Hardwood (Maple) drawer boxes apply glue to the tail boards only.
  6. Insert the drawer bottom into the dados.
  7. Apply glue to the sockets of the Pin boards and dado of Tail board. Insert the final Tail board.
  8. Once all joints are tight, check for square. If the diagonal measurement is off more than ⅛” use a clamp or other device to bring it closer to square.
  9. Sand the box to 180 grit, paying special attention to the dovetails. Fill any gaps with glue and allow sanding dust mix in to make a tight look.
  10. Once the glue is dry apply desired finish and install.

Blown away by the walnut drawer boxes we ordered. We built a custom walnut vanity and wanted the drawer boxes to match. It was spendy but so worth it. The construction on the boxes is fantastic and they feel very solid. I love that the bottom is thicker than most companies build theirs. There was a little excess glue where the Blum locking device goes that I had to cut away but not a big deal. Very, very happy with the purchase. I often pull them out and just stare at them, they’re so gorgeous. They also really match the existing walnut we’ve stained using danish oil. See the pictures for reference (ignore the unfinished doors). Color isn’t as warm/orange in person, just the iPhone color processing making it look that way

I was blown away by the quality of the tight joints on all five maple drawers purchased. However, one of the drawers, a 15x21x11, which was the largest height available, didn’t line up perfectly in one corner like the smaller drawers. Using cabinet clamps, as I did with all the others, I was able to square it with only a small gap which isn’t too noticeable. After sanding and poly they looked too good to be hidden as a drawer box. Impressive quality and will hopefully need more drawers in the future for more travel trailer builds.
