Hardwood Dovetail Drawer Boxes are the standard in American cabinet drawers. We think you’ll be pleased by the craftsmanship and durability of these Drawer Boxes.

  • 5/8″ Solid Hardwood sides with eased edges, Dovetailed at the corners
  • 3/8″ engineered core plywood bottom; Flat, stable, and Strong (not 1/4″ like most competitors)
  • 1/2″ recessed bottom; Ready for Undermount OR Side mount drawer slides; Optional rear notching works for undermount slides up to 2-1/4″ wide.
  • Width: 6″-42″; Depth: 7″-36″; Height: 2.625″- 11″
  • Shipped Ready to Assemble, Sand, and Finish; Or, choose Factory Assembly and Clearcoat finishing
  • Available in White Hard Maple, Red Oak, Cherry, and Walnut
  • These drawer boxes are made with the intention that the installer will fasten a drawer front to the front. You can see our drawer fronts here.

UNASSEMBLED BOXES REQUIRE SOME WOODWORKING SKILLS TO ASSEMBLE. THIS MAY INCLUDE FITTING DOVETAILS, GLUING, FILLING, AND SANDING. IF YOU ARE UNSURE, FACTORY ASSEMBLY IS A GREAT VALUE! Dovetails MUST be assembled as soon as you receive them. Changes in relative humidity will greatly affect the wood. Products ordered unassembled can not be returned for failed assembly.

Determine Which Slides You’ll Use

You must first decide what type of drawer slides you want to use. If you are reusing your existing slides, simply measure your existing drawer box and enter those dimensions into the Customizer.

If you need new slides, you’ll need to choose which mounting style you want. There are two main styles of slides that we recommend: Side Mount and Under Mount. These terms refer to how the slide mounts to the drawer box. Both mount to the cabinet in similar ways.

Measure the exact width and height of your opening. Also, measure from the face of the cabinet to the back inside wall of the cabinet.

WIDTH: For drawer boxes with 5/8″ sides. subtract 3/8″ from the opening width. If using a drawer box with 1/2″ thick sides, subtract 5/8″.

HEIGHT: Subtract at least 7/8″ from the opening height.

DEPTH: MUST match the slide length. Available slide lengths are 9, 12, 15, 18, and 21″ in standard duty and 18, 21, 24, 27, and 30″ in heavy-duty. Kitchen cabinets will usually use a 21″ slide so the drawer box must be exactly 21″. Bathroom cabinets usually need 18″ slides with 18″ deep drawer boxes.

For KV 8400 and 8450FM Side Mount Slides

Measure the exact width and height of your opening. Also, measure from the face of the cabinet to the back inside wall of the cabinet.

WIDTH: Subtract 1-1/16″ from the opening width. This is regardless of the drawer box side thickness.

HEIGHT: Subtract at least 1/2″ from the opening height.

DEPTH: The outside depth dimension of the new drawer should usually match the slide length. But this is not as critical as with under-mount slides. Kitchen cabinets usually need 22″ slides and bathrooms usually need 18″ slides.

Ordering:

Dovetail Drawer Boxes can be ordered to specifically suit your needs. Dovetails can be ordered assembled or unassembled. If ordered assembled, they can also be pre-finished in durable clear conversion varnish.

When ordering, please refer to drawer boxes using WIDTH x DEPTH x HEIGHT, as illustrated in the diagram below.

Dovetail Drawer Box Dimensions

Tolerances

The Cabinet Door Store warrants that the width and height are to be within +/- 1 mm and the depth to be within +/- 3mm.

Prefinishing

The Cabinet Door Store sprays a 35° post catalyst lacquer as the standard sheen of clear finish. When the drawer boxes are ordered assembled and prefinished the clear lacquer is applied after the drawer box is assembled. The drawer box is sprayed on the inside and outside but not on the underside. When ordering “prefinished” our standard default is to finish the drawer box with a clear lacquer coating. When a drawer box is ordered unassembled and prefinished the parts will come clear lacquered on all sides. Note that when ordered unassembled and prefinished an adhesive that adheres to lacquer must be used in the assembly process.

Assembling Half-Blind Dovetail Drawer Boxes

UNASSEMBLED BOXES REQUIRE SOME WOODWORKING SKILLS TO ASSEMBLE. THIS MAY INCLUDE FITTING DOVETAILS, GLUING, FILLING, AND SANDING. IF YOU ARE UNSURE, FACTORY ASSEMBLY IS A GREAT VALUE! Dovetails MUST be assembled as soon as you receive them. Changes in relative humidity will greatly affect the wood. Products ordered unassembled can not be returned for failed assembly.

  1. Arrange your tail (sides) and pin (front and back) pieces on a solid work surface. Make sure all pins and tails will line up and will assemble properly. If necessary, go through the motions of dry assembly before applying any glue.
  2. Lay one tail board down, dado (⅜” groove) facing up. Choose a pin board and apply a small amount of glue into each socket.
  3. Gently insert the sockets of a pin board over the tails of the tail board, aligning the dado. You will have to use some downward force. If you find you need abnormal force then ease the edges of the tails. Be careful not to sand the outside profile (dovetail) of the tail only the part that is binding in the socket.
  4. Insert the opposite pin board over the other end of the tail board after applying glue to it’s sockets.
  5. For Plywood drawer boxes, apply glue to the dados of the pin board and the two tail boards. For Hardwood (Maple) drawer boxes apply glue to the tail boards only.
  6. Insert the drawer bottom into the dados.
  7. Apply glue to the sockets of the Pin boards and dado of Tail board. Insert the final Tail board.
  8. Once all joints are tight, check for square. If the diagonal measurement is off more than ⅛” use a clamp or other device to bring it closer to square.
  9. Sand the box to 180 grit, paying special attention to the dovetails. Fill any gaps with glue and allow sanding dust mix in to make a tight look.
  10. Once the glue is dry apply desired finish and install.

Nice maple stock. I ordered the kit and assembled them. It took a little sanding and shaving, but that was expected as it was quite humid here when they arrived. With the cost of supplies, the assembled and finished price is a good value.

This was the first part of a cabinet conversion… this first box was to replace and old metal frame and side roller set up. I was so impressed with how well it went I ordered two more drawers for this base cabinet to convert the bottom from a door with 1 shelf to 2 drawers… a tall base drawer to attach the door and a second drawer recessed a bit to reach in and pull out. Received the other two drawers today and took under 2 hours to complete the install. Pics attached!

I ordered the boxes unassembled, they came clearly labeled and ready to be put together. Some light sanding was needed to make a good fit. I am very pleased with the outcome.

I needed to order a special size drawer because my not so talented contractor didn't move the gas line back. Drawer needed to be 16" deep and 6 " high. I'm very happy with this purchase. I'm sure this drawer will last me a long time.

The drawers were top quality, and had perfect dimensions, fit and finish. I did have once drawer with a dovetail joint that opened slightly. I called customer service and they were immediately on top of it. However, in the end I decided to fix it myself and it is now a non-issue.

I purchased the drawer boxes to put in a tall laundry room cabinet. The dovetail joints, 5/8" sides & 3/8" bottoms made them heavy duty. The dimensions were correct & the factory fit & finish was excellent.

Thank you so much, I couldn’t be any happier with your product. Originally our pantry had four sliding shelves. I wanted to replace them with deep drawers and found your product on line. I originally ordered four and when, I installed them, I found, I had room for one more. Always can use more storage. My wife is so happy she loves them.

Great construction and finish. These boxes were used as part of a renovation of our 30 year old Neff kitchen, the Cabinet Door Store quality was higher than the original high end cabinet boxes. All boxes and hardware was replaced. The original Kitchen doors were refinished by our painters. We have a completely renovated kitchen at a fraction of the cost of a new one - Thanks in large part to the team at The Cabinet Door Store!!!!

I used a prefab custom drawer box to simplify and accelerate a small table project. The end result turned out great, so I have few complaints. Custom-made items are always a bit expensive so that's to be expected.

Very well made, accurate to my specifications and easy to assemble. That said, 7 or 9 of the drawer bottoms had a damaged corner. It was obvious that this was not shipment damage as products were very well packaged. Looked like someone was balancing the bottom on its corner causing the damage. Corner had to be trimmed in order to fit in slot. Most were minor annoyance. Picture below

I was really surprised that there did not appear to be any thought put into making sure that the Class A surface (the surface that is most often visible & touched) met a higher standard for visual appeal. I ordered six drawer boxes. Of the six, five of them have cosmetically unappealing front panels. See attached photos. Only one has a clear maple front. the other five look dirty, as they have a strange black discoloration. I wouldn't have minded so much if the sides or back were discolored, I wouldn't see that. However, it was the front panels that had the discoloration. The back panels were actually nicer looking. Due to the box design, there's no way to switch the back & front panels - the front is the front, and the back is the back. Couldn't more care be used when selecting wood for the front, vs the sides & back of the boxes? Disappointing. Buyers should know that the beautiful clear maple box that is shown on the website is probably *not* what you will receive.

These cabinets re fantastic, the quality of the wood and dovetail joints is excellent and the sizing was perfect. Better than expected for the price. Along with the Blum slides they open and close smoothly and the slides are hidden. I replaced my original Blum hinges with the 0-protrusion 155 degrees hinges so the cabinet door would open fully and would block the drawers. I liked them so much I placed another order for more.
