UNASSEMBLED BOXES REQUIRE SOME WOODWORKING SKILLS TO ASSEMBLE. THIS MAY INCLUDE FITTING DOVETAILS, GLUING, FILLING, AND SANDING. IF YOU ARE UNSURE, FACTORY ASSEMBLY IS A GREAT VALUE! Dovetails MUST be assembled as soon as you receive them. Changes in relative humidity will greatly affect the wood. Products ordered unassembled can not be returned for failed assembly.

Determine Which Slides You’ll Use

You must first decide what type of drawer slides you want to use. If you are reusing your existing slides, simply measure your existing drawer box and enter those dimensions into the Customizer.

If you need new slides, you’ll need to choose which mounting style you want. There are two main styles of slides that we recommend: Side Mount and Under Mount. These terms refer to how the slide mounts to the drawer box. Both mount to the cabinet in similar ways.

Measure the exact width and height of your opening. Also, measure from the face of the cabinet to the back inside wall of the cabinet.

WIDTH: For drawer boxes with 5/8″ sides. subtract 3/8″ from the opening width. If using a drawer box with 1/2″ thick sides, subtract 5/8″.

HEIGHT: Subtract at least 7/8″ from the opening height.

DEPTH: MUST match the slide length. Available slide lengths are 9, 12, 15, 18, and 21″ in standard duty and 18, 21, 24, 27, and 30″ in heavy-duty. Kitchen cabinets will usually use a 21″ slide so the drawer box must be exactly 21″. Bathroom cabinets usually need 18″ slides with 18″ deep drawer boxes.

For KV 8400 and 8450FM Side Mount Slides

Measure the exact width and height of your opening. Also, measure from the face of the cabinet to the back inside wall of the cabinet.

WIDTH: Subtract 1-1/16″ from the opening width. This is regardless of the drawer box side thickness.

HEIGHT: Subtract at least 1/2″ from the opening height.

DEPTH: The outside depth dimension of the new drawer should usually match the slide length. But this is not as critical as with under-mount slides. Kitchen cabinets usually need 22″ slides and bathrooms usually need 18″ slides.

Ordering:

Dovetail Drawer Boxes can be ordered to specifically suit your needs. Dovetails can be ordered assembled or unassembled. If ordered assembled, they can also be pre-finished in durable clear conversion varnish.

When ordering, please refer to drawer boxes using WIDTH x DEPTH x HEIGHT, as illustrated in the diagram below.

Dovetail Drawer Box Dimensions

Tolerances

The Cabinet Door Store warrants that the width and height are to be within +/- 1 mm and the depth to be within +/- 3mm.

Prefinishing

The Cabinet Door Store sprays a 35° post catalyst lacquer as the standard sheen of clear finish. When the drawer boxes are ordered assembled and prefinished the clear lacquer is applied after the drawer box is assembled. The drawer box is sprayed on the inside and outside but not on the underside. When ordering “prefinished” our standard default is to finish the drawer box with a clear lacquer coating. When a drawer box is ordered unassembled and prefinished the parts will come clear lacquered on all sides. Note that when ordered unassembled and prefinished an adhesive that adheres to lacquer must be used in the assembly process.

Assembling Half-Blind Dovetail Drawer Boxes

UNASSEMBLED BOXES REQUIRE SOME WOODWORKING SKILLS TO ASSEMBLE. THIS MAY INCLUDE FITTING DOVETAILS, GLUING, FILLING, AND SANDING. IF YOU ARE UNSURE, FACTORY ASSEMBLY IS A GREAT VALUE! Dovetails MUST be assembled as soon as you receive them. Changes in relative humidity will greatly affect the wood. Products ordered unassembled can not be returned for failed assembly.

  1. Arrange your tail (sides) and pin (front and back) pieces on a solid work surface. Make sure all pins and tails will line up and will assemble properly. If necessary, go through the motions of dry assembly before applying any glue.
  2. Lay one tail board down, dado (⅜” groove) facing up. Choose a pin board and apply a small amount of glue into each socket.
  3. Gently insert the sockets of a pin board over the tails of the tail board, aligning the dado. You will have to use some downward force. If you find you need abnormal force then ease the edges of the tails. Be careful not to sand the outside profile (dovetail) of the tail only the part that is binding in the socket.
  4. Insert the opposite pin board over the other end of the tail board after applying glue to it’s sockets.
  5. For Plywood drawer boxes, apply glue to the dados of the pin board and the two tail boards. For Hardwood (Maple) drawer boxes apply glue to the tail boards only.
  6. Insert the drawer bottom into the dados.
  7. Apply glue to the sockets of the Pin boards and dado of Tail board. Insert the final Tail board.
  8. Once all joints are tight, check for square. If the diagonal measurement is off more than ⅛” use a clamp or other device to bring it closer to square.
  9. Sand the box to 180 grit, paying special attention to the dovetails. Fill any gaps with glue and allow sanding dust mix in to make a tight look.
  10. Once the glue is dry apply desired finish and install.

Fitment of all parts was perfect. Parts fit so tightly I decided to not take it apart to reassemble with glue. So I used my brad nailer and put in two brads at each corner after measuring diagonally to assure squareness. Then I discovered the drawer was too wide to allow the sliders to clear the front trim of the cabinet. So I narrowed the drawer by one inch. Photos shows connecters used to reattach the front and rear pieces that were trimmed. Other photos show full extension sliders, and wing door that I removed from cabinet and attached to drawer as drawer front. Finished project worked out beautifully. I will be ordering additional drawers from you as my wife's purchases require modifications.

Hi, The drawer came and was easy to assemble. I was just curious why it takes so long to receive after it is ordered. The drawer was too wide after we attached the roller assembly ( I did subtract a few cm after measuring the width per your instructions) , but I sanded off a few centimeters off of each side to make more space. I have attached a picture. If I ever need to order another box, I will subtract a little extra. Over all I like the easiness of assembly and the quality of the material. Thank you.

Happy customer, but be warned about assembling yourself. These Baltic birch drawer boxes were the most cost effective option for my pantry remodel. I decided to try the option to assemble and finish myself. They warn that you need some woodworking skills to do it right and they were not lying. I have a lot of skill, but this tried my patience. Be forewarned that you have to assemble the boxes within a day or so of receipt to prevent the wood from moving too much. You cannot wait around. I had to do a lot of sanding to get things smooth and the plywood is prone to splinter and the veneer can chip. Assembly required a rubber mallet and a lot of force and patience. I finished with two spray cans of Minwax lacquer which was easy but be sure you have excellent ventilation. The boxes look great but If I could do it over again, I would certainly pay extra for the boxes to be assembled and finished. Overall for the price, this is a great product and good quality. See pics.

Would be good to include detailed assembly instructions with the drawer components. I believe this is on the website, but I would like to have it included with the drawer. There is a definite order in which the sides need to be assembled and glued together.

The drawer sides were very nice with seemingly fairly good quality baltic birch. I assembled them immediately upon receipt but still had to do substantial sanding/filing on the dovetails to get them to fit together. Not sure how this could have been avoided. But the end product was pretty good and looks really nice in my camper van. If the dovetails had gone together nicer without filing, I think the finish would have been just a bit cleaner. They look great with a few coats of poly!

I ordered unfinished and unassembled baltic birch drawer parts for three drawers. The order took some time to be fulfilled, but I received several confirmation emails that gave me confidence in my purchase. The pieces were exceptionally well-packaged. The pieces were well-made, and the finger joints on all corners fit together without much effort. The test fit was so good, I did not taking them apart to add glue. They do recommend assembling the drawer boxes immediately on arrival. I did this on the day they arrived following the very helpful instructions that were sent by email. The photo shows my three drawers. The top one is upside down to show the excellent cut-outs for the Blum under-mount slides. In the past I have built this detail myself out of 1/2" stock, and have never gotten such a clean result. I would definitely order from The Cabinet Door Store again.

I have showed these to several people and we cannot believe the quality of you products. I assembled 24 of these drawers and installed them myself I have very little wood working experience. A professional carpenter with 40 years experience found it hard to believe the price and quality of your products. No more digging for things in the cabinets. Thanks

The craftsmanship was excellent and spot on regarding the dimensions I had requested. I had originally considered making these drawers myself, but I concluded having The Cabinet Door Store make them was more cost and time effective. The drawers were part of a cabinet that I had constructed for my daughter and her husband at their Ocean City NJ beach condo. A picture of the drawer boxes and the completed cabinet is below. I used a CNC milling machine to make nameplates for each drawer face. In summary - I was very pleased with The Cabinet Door Store and I have already recommended others use your services in the future.

The drawers are high quality and look good. The reason I don't give them a 5 is a that the slot for the drawer bottoms was too narrow (very slightly) so that the drawer bottoms would not fit. I enlarged the slots with a router and then the drawers assembled easily.

This was a birthday gift project to myself. My first idea was to build the drawers myself...so glad I decided to just order them assembled and costed. I was very pleased with the purchasing and shipping of these drawers. After purchase, I wanted to change the measurements by email and received a quick verification reply. When they arrived, they looked so pretty, I didn’t want to drill into them. :P So happy now that I can use all my pantry space. Thank you!

Very sturdy drawer boxes were easy to install. They have performed beautifully as pull-out shelving. Tools needed in install were minimal (pictured), and my skill level is minimal, too. In all, I installed 7 boxes/shelves. Now my kitchen is much more functional. The soft-close feature is a nice plus.

  2. Highly recommend Cabinet Door Store. Ordered custom kitchen cabinet drawers and slides. We had some questions about detailed measurements and customer service was quick to reply and address our concerns. Note, if you don’t want to do the rear notching yourself, please make sure to order the drawers WITH the notching already done. We ended up doing the notching ourselves, not a big deal but would have saved us some time if we had them done.

  3. Easy to assemble.
